Jos hiuspohja on hyvässä kunnossa, hiustuotteet voi valita hiusten kunnon ja muiden mieltymysten mukaan. Oireileva hiuspohja tarvitsee kuitenkin omat hiustuotteensa ainakin siihen asti, kunnes hiuspohja on taas terve. Jos hiuspohjan ongelmia tulee helposti, kannattaa käyttää myös ylläpitohoitoon soveltuvia tuotteita, jotta kutina, hilse, kuivuus tai liiallinen rasvoittuminen pysyvät kurissa.
Hiuspohjan huolellisella hoidolla voidaan ylläpitää myös hyvää hiusten kasvua, koska hiuspohjasta huolehtiminen voi ehkäistä ennenaikaista hiustenlähtöä. Kaikkeen hiustenlähdön aikatauluun ei kuitenkaan voida vaikuttaa huolellisimmallakaan hoidolla, koska kaljuuntuminen ja hiusrajan vetäytyminen on yleensä geneettistä. Kun hiukset ovat jo harventuneet, voidaan ohentuneita kohtia peittää hiuskuiduilla.
