Dandruff is good to distinguish from a dry or atopic scalp, which can also flake, but usually the dandruff of a dry scalp is more fine (as in dry skin) and the scalp feels tight. "Normal" dandruff is usually a bit more flaky and looks and feels more greasy. Typical dandruff is caused by sebaceous dermatitis (seborrhea, seborrheic eczema), while dry dandruff is caused by dryness of the skin. Psoriasis can also occur on the scalp, in which case the dandruff on the scalp is usually clearly larger and tile-like, and patches of dandruff are often also outside the scalp area.
Dandruff can cause itching and redness, and the scalp can also have unpleasant odors caused by microbial growth (fungi). It can also make the skin irritated. As a treatment for dandruff, it is important to prevent excessive microbial growth, and for acute irritations, such as itching, to use leave-in hair tonics.
